Youtube Shorts Introduces New AI Music Generation Tool
Powered by the Lyria algorithm, Dream Track represents a test case for compensating musicians who help train generative systems.
YouTube aims to challenge TikTok with new AI features for creating short video soundtracks. Youtube Shorts’ Dream Track can generate original songs mirroring the styles of seven artists who have lent their work to the project, such as Charlie Puth and Sia. Creators simply provide prompts like "upbeat acoustic ballad" and pick an artist reference.
Powered by Google DeepMind's Lyria algorithm, Dream Track represents a test case for compensating musicians who help train generative systems, with YouTube pledging discussions about direct payments to artists whose works have helped train the system. A second tool called Music AI further allows artists in YouTube’s incubator program to experiment with remixing, transforming and interpreting songs in novel ways. The tech can convert genres, extract melodies from humming or craft musical interpretations of words.
While promising creative opportunities, AI in music also raises debates about fair use, with many artists arguing that their work shouldn't feed others' systems without consent or profit-sharing.
